"Camryn" by Camryn Growing Thunder
Created as part of a series of portraits depicting the strength in my maternal lineage, this self portrait reflects my identity as a queer Dakota/Nakoda woman and is an open embrace of femininity. Pink is my favorite color, appearing frequently in my practice. I use this color unapologetically to challenge the ways femininity is often dismissed or diminished. The background features a butterfly design that is commonly found in Dakota/Nakoda beadwork made for young girls. The butterfly reflects transformation and the enduring strength of younger generations. My goal is to create safety for the youth in my community through artistic practice, specifically for young women and queer individuals. Portraiture is how I find my authentic voice and how I encourage future generations to lead with love and authenticity.
